Facebook celebrates its 10th birthday today, but in "social media years" does this means it's approaching early retirement?
Last month, two Princeton PhD students predicted that Facebook will lose 80% of its users by 2017, comparing the site to an infectious disease. The research has been criticised by many commentators and has drawn a tongue in cheek response from a couple of Facebook engineers who used a similar methodology to predict that Princeton won't have any students at all by 2021.
Nevertheless, it's not the first time that people have predicted the imminent decline of Facebook. The argument is that Facebook is no longer the go-to social media platform, particularly amongst younger users, and is now dominated by parents and grandparents who add younger family members as friends.
In last week's PR True Or False podcast: "Facebook’s Days Are Numbered", Phil Szomszor and Austin Brailey made the point that Facebook has tremendous financial power to outgun any pretenders to the crown. But with Snapchat, Twitter, WhatsApp and Instagram (owned by Facebook) growing in popularity, the question remains: has Facebook got staying power? Or is it so intertwined into our lives that abandoning the network would be too difficult?
Firefly ventured out to ask the general public a few questions to investigate. Take a look at our video showcasing the views of a few users or non-users and their thoughts on Facebook.
