We have a bit of a penchant for IoT (Internet of Things) apps and we’ve been watching IFTTT for a while. ‘If This Then That’ used to purely connect social media accounts. For example, it allowed you to automatically post pictures from your Twitter feed to your Instagram feed if they contained images.
We’ve recently checked in on IFTTT again and it’s started including IoT functionality, opening up a whole new world of possibilities. For example, you could create a ‘rule’ that says “if I tweet ’having a dreadful day,’ dim the lights, run me a bath and put on some classical music” (assuming your house is sufficiently IoT enabled).
It answers a very fundamental need in the IoT world. At the moment, it’s easy to control blocks of devices from the same manufacturer, like dimming all the light bulbs in the same room or zone. However, setting up multi-device policies and ‘mood’ settings is much more useful – otherwise, you’re messing around with multiple apps to do something you could do in five seconds manually. This bodes extremely well for the IoT industry because it desperately needs this kind of intelligence to be accepted into the daily lives of ‘non-techies’.
And whilst not everything is IoT-enabled today, this cleverness is indicative of a very smart and bright future for the smart home.
